The group 100+ Women Who Care presented a check for $12,900 Monday to the St. Benedict’s Soup Kitchen in downtown Terre Haute.
The funds will be used to purchase a new commercial refrigerator, commercial hand mixers, can openers and other items.
“This money is a godsend,” said Judy Hogan, the soup kitchen’s supervisor, noting the facility’s refrigerator had recently stopped working. “We’re going to be able to … keep our doors open.
“There’s lots of food to be bought and lots of cleaning supplies.”
Each weekday, the kitchen serves lunch to between 150 and 200 people, Hogan said, explaining that the need shows no signs of abating.
100+ Women Who Care is a group of local female philanthropists who commit to giving a $100 membership fee annually to an endowment fund to support charitable needs and an additional $100 at each of four meetings each year, for an annual commitment of $500.
Members nominate three charities to be considered for quarterly grants and members vote on which charity will be funded.
